Hot autumn arts on Majorca: the Balearic Isle is rapidly gaining a profile as one of Spain’s major cultural centres, with no less than two new art fairs planned for September. JAM ART Mallorca will be launched as the art fair for explorers: a presentation of the best of the latest work to hit the art world.

In cooperation with the book scout magazine, JAM – a review of new publications in the fields of architecture, art, photography, fashion, design and interiors, which appears twice each year – the organisers have invited internationally operating galleries from various countries to present work by artists of the younger generation.

Amongst the participants are – to name but a few - the SKL Gallery, Centre d’art la Real, La Caja Blanca, Addaya and Galeria Joanna Kunstmann from Palma, ArtPort-Project from New York, Stefan Denninger and Eva Bracke are representing Berlin whilst Cornelius Pleser and Jürgen Kalthoff will be flying in from Munich and Essen, the Galerie Hartwich from the island of Rügen, Xpressns from Hamburg and Contemporaer from Brussel.

The exhibition programme will be supplemented by cooperative ventures with twenty international leading publishing houses. In the publishers’ lounge, art book publishers and other creative minds can meet to discuss new ideas and concepts for art books. And lectures and panel presentations will ensure that the public, too, gets to hear from these “ambassadors of beauty”.

The art fair location couldn’t be more perfect. In the heart of Palma and only a few minutes from the museum and gallery centre in the old town, the congress palace – generously put at JAM ART’s disposal by our sponsor, the real estate company, Kühn+Partner - provides enough space for 35 galleries and an almost unlimited presentation area under open skies. The visitors can walk between the exhibition hall and the surrounding plazas – in an atmosphere that many are more familiar with from larger events such as the Venice Biennale or the documenta: here, a fair showing of young talents will be presented in a smaller format.

Indoors and outdoors, an exhibition and art fair, a lounge and a sculpture show are combined at JAM ART Mallorca 07 to create an art event with great southern flair.

The thematic content of participating artists’ work is equally exciting. With its video competition, “Cool Stories” ArtPort will present at JAM ART probably the first thoroughly researched, comprehensive artists’ exchange project to take place between Spain and New York, which investigates the issue of global warming.

Many galleries have submitted special project proposals. Israeli artist, Zvika Kantor will set up the installation, “Ghost” in the Congress Palace whilst photographer, Martin Liebscher, whose work can otherwise be found in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the Berlin Philharmonic and the collection of the Deutsche Bank, will be exhibiting his latest work, “Casino Esplanade” in which he appears around 100 times in the various roles of player, croupier and onlooker in Hamburg’s new ‘Spielbank’ casino: always himself and yet always different.

The fringe programme of JAM ART Mallorca will also be different from that of other art fairs. On the agenda is, of course, a JAM session – free interplay between video and performance artists, fashion designers, other designers, DJs and musicians. Add to that the Nit de l’art – the “Night of Art” on 20. September, which annually draws thousands of visitors into Palma’s galleries and art houses – and JAM ART could well rapidly become the “Fiesta de l’art”.
